New edition Luc Tuymans '4PM'
27-Oct-2011 - 27-Oct-2011The newest edition by Luc Tuymans entitled '4PM' leads back to a very recent painting on display in 2011 at the exhibition 'The Twenty Seventh of January Two Thousand and Eleven' in the gallery Zeno X in Antwerp.
The image originated in a Malmö hotel room, where Tuymans was staying in 2009 during the setup of the Against the Day exhibition (previously at the Wiels Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels). The curtains filter the city lights that are darkened by the winter night: street lanterns and headlights of passing cars project blind spots. Tuymans translates this image into a palette of toxic colours. Despite the lack of light, a remarkably colourful image of vertical pastel stripes is created, interchanged with the dark curtain folds. The framing of the image transforms the window into a trapezium and gives the image its strange effect. This hotel room offers no warmth. The mood is melancholic and filled with loneliness. A room without a view.
